The sellers, who are the hosts, stand quite confident and stable in their positions. Buyers often appear somewhat confused, exercising caution to avoid overpaying. Then there are the supporting services like tuk-tuks, carriers, and other service providers that contribute their buzz to these lively, albeit sweaty and aromatic, places.

My Personal Conquests in Bargaining

At the local market known as Orussey in Phnom Penh, one of the largest markets spanning 3 floors, you can purchase everything from food to clothing, garments, kitchen appliances, animals, and more. This is both a wholesale and retail hub, surrounded by an array of jewelry shops, financial services, and beyond.

Trading in Orussey allowed me to feel superpowered as I bargained like the locals without getting ripped off. It wasn't necessarily my favorite place, but it was where I intentionally went to feel integrated into the community.

Introducing Guests to Local Life

For daily shopping, I preferred the BKK1 market, just a few blocks from my residence. Small and authentic, it is a hidden gem rarely visited by tourists. It became a place where I would take my guests to share the experience. Everyone loved it.

From witnessing the speed at which the ladies clean fish while sitting in the lotus position, to the expensive imported apples from Australia, the market is a tapestry of local life. There's also a food court offering freshly barbecued frogs daily – a delicacy I wholeheartedly recommend.

Then there's the beauty area within the market, featuring small stalls for hair and nail services, along with spa treatments, including skin whitening – a significant trend in Southeast Asia. I found myself advising my guests to bring their shampoos and hygiene supplies due to the prevalence of skin-lightening ingredients in local products.

A Foreigner Among Locals

As a foreigner wandering these areas, I would often receive friendly waves from the ladies at the beauty stalls, surprised to see me pass by.

The Market's Sparkling Corner

The jewelry section always fascinated me, with its shining pieces displayed under glass stands. Despite being a small market, the array of jewelry suggested a steady stream of business, reflecting the local allure of gold, which holds both showy and religious significance for the Khmer people.

Cultural Beliefs and Superstitions

Khmer culture harbors a special attraction toward gold, often bought as a display of wealth or for religious reasons, as gold is believed to protect against the evil eye and malevolent spirits. This irony struck me most when a Christian preacher I knew adorned his newborn daughter with gold to ward off the evil eye.

Fortune-Telling: A Twist of Fate

The superstitions prevalent in Cambodia also brought to light an unexpected figure at the BKK1 market: an American lady who read fortunes for the locals, becoming incredibly popular among the wealthy Cambodian women.
